Singapore 57 - Bishan, Thomson Road

thomson road

Bishan is a young housing estate. It used to be known as Kampong San Theng and Soon Hock Village.  The history of Kampong San Theng dates back to more than a century ago. Kampong San Theng together with the temple and other facilities, was the result of joint efforts by pioneer members of the three perfecters namely, Kwong Fu, Wai Chow Fu and Siew Hing Fu from the province of Canton, China. The members also set up the Singapore Kwong Wai Siew Free Hospital at Serangoon Road.

The Singapore Kwong Wai Siew Peck San Theng, a charitable organisation by a federation of sixteen clans of the Cantonese community in Singapore ran and managed the Kampong San Theng.  Subsequently, in 1982, the area was redeveloped and today the Peck San Theng Temple/Columbarium, which houses more than 100,000 niches, is the only gentle reminder of the past.  Soon Hock Village was part of the larger Kampong San Theng. The village was bounded by Upper Thomson Road to the south-west, Marymount Road to the east and the private housing of Thomson Garden to the north.  Prior to its resettlement programme, Soon Hock Village was an exclusive Chinese village with a predominance of Hokkiens. It was popular for its production of sesame oil and noodles.
