DFS Group Limited, based in San Francisco, California, is the world's leading retailer for international travelers. DFS was founded in Hong Kong in 1961 as a liquor, tobacco, cosmetics and fragrances duty-free concession at the Kai Tak airport. In 1962, DFS won its first duty-free airport concession in Honolulu. The company concentrated on the Asia/Pacific region as the fastest growing area for international travel. Its customers were primarily Japanese. In 1968, DFS opened its first downtown store in Honolulu for Japanese traveling on holiday. DFS developed a strong relationship with travel agents both in Japan and at various overseas destinations. Based on these relationships, travel agents brought in large numbers of Japanese tour groups to shop at DFS stores. Once onsite, DFS was able to offer these travelers branded merchandise that they could buy both for themselves and as gifts to take back home, at significant savings to their domestic prices.
