LKY regretted not having a F1 CourseApril 2005 - Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) regretted not having built a Formula One racing course that would have generated mega-bucks for the local economy. He said that we made a mistake in not building a Formula One course. LKY is Singapore Prime Minister for 30 years until he stepped down in 1990.He was quoted as saying "I think I was dim witted then."LKY said he could not understand the allure of Formula One Grand Prix events but saw that hosting these races brought along economic spin-offs to the host countries. In is words... "Driving around and it goes into the pits and they change the tyres and they rev out... makes no sense to me."He went to you say "But I learnt a lesson and I´m telling my younger chaps, look, pay attention to all this, this is what will make Singapore buzz." Bright F1 lights along along Saint AndrewsSingapore has tested a small section of the lights that will be used for the country´s first ever Formula One race in September. On Saturday evening, 29 March 2008, a part of Saint Andrew´s Road just outside Saint Andrew´s Cathedral was lit up to simulate daylight. After about 10 minutes, at 3000 Lux it was as bright as daylight, or few times the brightness of the National Stadium. The man behind the whole set-up is lighting expert Valerio Maiolli, an Italian. According to Mr Maiolli, driving at high speeds under these lights is safe, even if it were to rain heavily. For the test lighting, 2 trusses measuring 32 metres each were used to hang 16 lights or lighting projectors. The lights were installed four metres apart at a height of 10 metres. A total of 1,500 lighting F1 SGP Singapore

Segway only allowed in One NorthOne North is Singapore´s new integrated science park at Buona Vista. Singapore Government has allowed to introduce personal transporters like the Segway at One North Park. Under existing regulations, the Segway will have no market in Singapore. If it uses the roads, it needs a COE. So, it is a non-starter. And because it is motorised, it is not allowed for use on our jogging and cycling tracks. So, the only place you can use it in Singapore is in your own private compound. And it costs too much for you to keep it as a toy back home. The Singapore Government finally is allowed only in One North. The personal transporters can run on pedestrian walkways and certain designated roads, and then let us watch what happens. If there are problems, then the Singapore Government may tighten their rules on its On the Move

Bodhi Tree @ Jing Long Si TempleThe Bodhi Tree is sacred to all Buddhist. The tree sheltered the Buddha from the elements during his quest for enlightenment and it is under the Bodhi tree that the Buddha attained enlightenment. Thus the Bodhi tree has come to symbolize the Buddha´s enlightenment, his wisdom and compassion. The Bodhi tree at Jin Long Si Temple (Jing Long Si Temple), at 30.5 metres tall and with a girth of 8.5 metres, is the biggest in Singapore. The tree is estimated age of over 120 years old. The Bodhi tree at Jing Long Si Temple was one of the twelve seeds that were said to have been brought by monks from Sri Lanka in the nineteenth century. Jing Long Si Temple

New technology is enabling passengers to take more control of the airport check-in process in the new T3 terminal. While at new facilities in Singapore Changi´s Terminal 3, customer self-service is the backbone on which the architecture depends, elsewhere, new technologies form the core of ways to repackage existing terminals in a different way. Much of the demand for more self-service stems from the passenger´s desire for more control over the journey, to exercise power in a process that often leaves the customer, the purported centre of the process, feeling marginal. Passengers in T3 expect more options to control their travel experience, and self-service is part of their expectation of full service. The empowerment that people get from new technology has benefits for airlines.

7 February 2008 will be the first day of Chinese New Year. On this day, it is customary to have brooms and dust pans put away on so that luck cannot be swept away. Many Chinese, especially Buddhists, abstain from meat consumption on the first day because it is believed that this will ensure longevity for them. Some consider lighting fires to be bad luck on New Year´s Day, so all food to be consumed is cooked the day before. Most importantly, the first day of Chinese New Year is a time when families visit the oldest and most senior members of their extended family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents. 2008 Toyota Corolla Altis The Toyota Corolla is a legendary car. Since the introduction of the first Corolla in 1968, over 30 million units have been sold for the last 40 years. Everybody who knows what a car is has heard of the name Corolla. Toyota seem very keen to change the Corolla image with the 10th generation (G10) sedan. The new 2008 Corolla is a dramatic departure from the succession of dull, anonymously styled models that people have come to expect. Is it beautiful? No. But. with the new design, finally a Corolla with a personality of its own. Previously Corollas always looked like Toyota had taken all the most boring design elements from other manufacturers and dulled them down even further to insure that there was nothing particularly outstanding or different. To grease or Not to grease One recent study has shown that bribes account for 8% of the total cost of running a business in Uganda. Another found that corruption boosted the price of hospital supplies in Buenos Aires by 15%. Though most of the world is plagued by corruption, even serial offenders try to conceal it. Nigerian policemen are known to ask for “a little something for the weekend”. "Kopi Duit" means "Coffee Money" or term use for asking or taking bribes in Malaysia. Mexican traffic police will suggest that you buy them a refresco, a soft drink. A bribe to a border guard may be folded into a passport. A sweetener to a Thailand's traffic cop is often placed in the ticket-book that is handed to the driver. Singapore Grand Prix ended its 12-year run in 22nd April 1973. The race, which drew international drivers and spawned regional aces like Harvey Yap, Albert Poon and Anne Wong, was held on a street circuit in Upper Thomson. But after a series of fatalities, motor racing was banned after 1973 by the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. He said he could not understand the allure of such events, "driving around and then going into the pits; after that, changing the tyres and revving out again ... makes no sense to me."
There were a few street races which survived like Singapore´s Thomson Road, which hosted a regular "Grand Prix" right up to the early 1970s. This featured an unusual hazard for racers, sticky oil trails left on the roads from the local diesel buses. Singapore´s Anne Wong in her a red BMC Mini Cooper S, Albert Poon´s Alfa F1 SGP Singapore

Warhol painting the this actual BMW M1 all by himself. He is reported to have spent only 23 minutes painting the car - thick brush marks are still visible. Andy Warhol ran his fingers through the paint to leave a personal touch and left his signature at the rear bumper of this colourful BMW M1. Expect more expensive cab rides Cab rider can expect to pay more for their cab rides as taxi companies begin replacing their fleets with new vehicles that meet the stricter Euro IV emission standards. Comfort Taxi operator ComfortDelGro, which operates about 16,000 out of the 22,000 taxis here, will reset the meters from 3 Janunary 2007 to a new $2.70 flag-down fare for rides in any of its 100 new Hyundai Sonatas. Over the next six months, we will expect to see 600 more such Hyundai Sonatas cabs. Reason for the increase is due mainly to the cost of these Euro IV emission standards cabs. At S$ 57,000 each, the Sonatas cost 22 per cent more than existing Toyota Crown taxis, so Taxi Operator will charge its drivers a higher rental of about $95 per day, up from $88. Archived

The cost of mail to any address within Singapore will go up by two cents to 25 cents. International mail will cost between 5 cents and 40 cents more. The last price hike was six years ago that Singapore Post has raised prices for domestic mail and the first time in 11 years for international mail. According to SingPost said the hike is due to the drop in people sending snail mail and higher operating costs. It will also cost 20 cents more to post registered mail. Over the years the Gallery has welcomed diverse and challenging contemporary visual and performance art, particularly with our own curated programme, New Criteria. "As an arts space we want to be approachable, open, diverse and versatile, yet at the same time we want to challenge artists, and demand that they think carefully about what they want to do in our space, and how they are going to do it. Our aim is to nurture and support the artistic process, and especially to encourage and engage new artists; however, we do not want to be a space that is merely convenient."
